Uninjured Elmiron Users May Also Want Their Day In Court

Elmiron eyesight damage could begin many years after first taking the drug

Friday, December 4, 2020 - Thousands of individual Elmiron patients with early-onset age-related macular degeneration have filed lawsuits against Janssen Pharmaceuticals for failing to warn them of the potential dangers. Also, people who are taking Elmiron but have not as of yet experienced a loss of vision are concerned that it may be inevitable that they may develop Elmiron eyesight damage someday in the future. Concern for future Elmiron eyesight injuries began after reading the FDA-mandated Elmiron warning label update of June 2020. Whether or not an as-of-yet uninjured Elmiron patient can join a nationwide class-action against Janssen Pharmaceuticals for failing to warn them of inevitable Elmiron eyesight damage is a matter that should be discussed with an Elmiron Eyesight Damage attorney. Individual class action lawsuits are forming state by state to represent those who have taken Elmiron.

If you have been taking Elmiron and are uninjured as of yet, you should consult an Elmiron Eyesight Damage Attorney for guidance on joining a class-action lawsuit. Most recommend uninjured Elmiron users take a vision test to establish a baseline to compare with their eyesight in the future. Elmiron is a drug prescribed by doctors to treat interstitial cystitis, a chronic painful bladder, and is taken mostly by women. Janssen Pharmaceuticals is the sole manufacturer of the drug and has enjoyed a multi-decade monopoly that has made the company billions of dollars. Janssen is being sued by individuals and also in class action lawsuits for failing to warn patients that taking the drug can lead to pre-mature age-related macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is damage to the pigment of the retina resulting in the inability to see clearly in less than optimal lighting conditions. Other symptoms of macular degeneration are eye pain, blurry vision, and difficulty reading. Sources have reported that this condition may be inevitable and could begin or continue long after one has stopped taking the medication. Individuals suffering from pre-mature macular degeneration are hiring Elmiron Eyesight Lawyers to help them file a claim and represent them in court.

Uninjured Elmiron patients became concerned in June of 2016 when Janssen updated the Elmiron label after forced to do so by the Food and Drug Administration. The new Elmiron warning reads as follows. "Retinal Pigmentary Changes: Pigmentary changes in the retina, reported in the literature as pigmentary maculopathy, have been identified with long-term use of ELMIRON (see ADVERSE REACTIONS). Although most of these cases occurred after 3 years of use or longer, cases have been seen with a shorter duration of use. While the etiology is unclear, cumulative dose appears to be a risk factor. Visual symptoms in the reported cases included difficulty reading, slow adjustment to low or reduced light environments, and blurred vision," according to the Elmiron website. Elmiron must be taken for about three months before it starts to become effective in treating bladder pain. Janssen also warns Elmiron patients may experience "Alopecia (4%), diarrhea (4%), nausea (4%), headache (3%), rash (3%), dyspepsia (2%), abdominal pain (2%), liver function abnormalities (1%), and dizziness (1%)."
